Abstract
This study showed that incorporation of single-walled carbon nanotubes (1wt%) in to PLLA polymer resulted in a large decrease in resistivity, but did not appear to affect the growth and viability of osteoblast-like cells. Also, incorporation of SWCNTs resulted in no significant difference in alkaline phosphatase activity, an important early-stage marker of osteogenic differentiation, of BMSC. These initial studies suggest that SWCNTs did not have a negative effect on cell behaviour, compared to results reported for MWCNT [2]; this could be related to the purity of CNTs used in the present study. Further, long term studies are required to determine if there is a toxic response to the SWCNTs as the PLLA degrades.
