RT Conference Proceedings T1 Osteoblast response to single wall carbon nanotube-PLLA composites A1 Annaz, B. A1 Reid, B. A1 Olalde, B. A1 Jurado, M. J. A1 Alava, J. I. A1 McCaig, C. D. A1 Gibson, I. R. AB This study showed that incorporation of single-walled carbon nanotubes (1wt%) in to PLLA polymer resulted in a large decrease in resistivity, but did not appear to affect the growth and viability of osteoblast-like cells. Also, incorporation of SWCNTs resulted in no significant difference in alkaline phosphatase activity, an important early-stage marker of osteogenic differentiation, of BMSC. These initial studies suggest that SWCNTs did not have a negative effect on cell behaviour, compared to results reported for MWCNT [2]; this could be related to the purity of CNTs used in the present study. Further, long term studies are required to determine if there is a toxic response to the SWCNTs as the PLLA degrades.
