Almost all aspects involved in transportation will be affected once autonomous driving is fully established in our daily life. This fact will raise the need of adaptation into many mechanisms to this incipient paradigm. In this study, we focus on two specific off-board aspects which also should be accommodated to this new environment: route planning and traffic prediction. Thus, this study is devoted to providing an overview on these two research fields, making a special emphasis on recent works related to autonomous driving. An equally valuable is the ending of our study, in which we share our envisioned status of this area. To do that, we identify some important challenges and upcoming opportunities which should stimulate research efforts in the next years.27enginfo:eu-repo/semantics/restrictedAccessTraffic data analysis and route planningbook part10.1016/B978-0-323-98339-6.00008-7Autonomous vehicleTraffic dataTraffic forecastingTraveling salesman problemVehicle routing problemGeneral Engineeringhttp://www.scopus.com/inward/record.url?scp=85162720397&partnerID=8YFLogxK
