Abstract
Tungsten carbide based hardmetals (WC-Co) are most widely used in different wear conditions because of their excellent wear resistance and fair strength-toughness combination. However, tungsten and cobalt are included in the EU list of critical raw materials representing a relative high economic and supply risk. This work presents an alternative material based on niobium carbide using an innovative stainless-steel binder. The material was obtained by a novel method: ERS (Electric Resistance Sintering). This is a low-cost alternative to Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS). In the developed process the duration of the cycles is very short (seconds) and without protective atmosphere. This work presents the effect of the processing parameters on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the NbC-316L materials. The characterization of the products includes the microstructural analysis, hardness and fracture toughness. It was possible to obtain full densification of the compacts and mechanical properties show interesting preliminary results.
