Item Study on the effect of sol-gel parameters on the size and morphology of silica microcapsules containing different organic compounds(2010-11) Kaltzakorta, Idurre; Erkizia, Edurne; CIRMETAL; ECOEFICIENCIA DE PRODUCTOS DE CONSTRUCCIÓNEfficient encapsulation of different compounds is an important research area for many industrial sectors such as food, cosmetic, medical and pharmaceutical industries [1]. Often these capsules are made up of organic materials. However, in recent years researchers have been focusing on the synthesis of inorganic capsules, and in particular, silica capsules due to their great chemical resistance, thermal stability, biocompatibility and their non-toxic quality for the environment [2]. In this study silica capsules have been synthesized by combining the sol-gel method with the emulsion process [3] and we have investigated how modifications in the synthesis parameters and even the nature of the encapsulated organic compound have an effect on the morphology, shell characteristics and the size distribution of the microcapsules.Item Synthesis and characterisation of silica nanoparticles bearing different functional groups obtained via a two-stage method(2010-11) Berriozabal, Gemma; De Miguel, Yolanda R.; INGENIERÍA DE SUPERFICIES; MercadoSilica nanoparticles with different functionalities (amine, nitrile, phenyl and vinyl) have been synthesised via a two-stage method and characterised in depth. Analysis by TEM, DLS and AFM has shown that the sizes of these synthetic nanoparticles are mainly in the range of 60-100 nm. In addition, 13C and 29Si CP/MAS NMR spectroscopy has been used to provide evidence of the presence of the organic functional groups. Finally, zeta potential measurements have been used to determine the stability of the colloidal dispersions in each case.
