Labor shortage partly due to depopulation of rural areas, especially in Europe, is another challenge. Domain specific problems such as accurate identification and proper quantification of pathogens affecting plant and animal health are key factors for minimizing economical risks, and not risking human health. The ECSEL AFarCloud (Aggregate FARming in the CLOUD) project will provide a distributed platform for autonomous farming that will allow the integration and cooperation of agriculture Cyber Physical Systems in real-time in order to increase efficiency, productivity, animal health, food quality and reduce farm labour costs. This platform will be integrated with farm management software and will support monitoring and decision-making solutions based on big data and real-time data mining techniques.Item Coordination of the charging of electric vehicles using a multi-agent system(2013-12) Papadopoulos, Panagiotis; Jenkins, Nick; Cipcigan, Liana M.; Grau, Inaki; Zabala, Eduardo; Tecnalia Research & InnovationAn agent-based control system that coordinates the battery charging of electric vehicles in distribution networks is presented. The objective of the control system is to charge the electric vehicles at times of low electricity prices within distribution network technical constraints. Search techniques and neural networks are used for the decision making of the agents. The ability of the control system to work successfully when the distribution network is operated within its loading limits and when the loading limits are violated is demonstrated through experimental validation.Item Fast Real-Time Trajectory Planning Method with 3rd-Order Curve Optimization for Automated Vehicles(IEEE, 2020-09-20) Lattarulo, Ray; Perez, Joshue; CCAMAutomated driving (AD) is one of the fastest-growing tendencies in the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) field with some interesting demonstrations and prototypes. Currently, the main research topics are aligned with vehicle communications, environment recognition, control, and decision-making. A real-time trajectory planning method for Automated vehicles (AVs) is presented in this paper; the contribution is part of AD’s decision-making module. This novel approach uses the properties of the 3er order Bézier curves to generate fast and reliable vehicle trajectories. Online execution and vehicle tracking capacities are considered on the approach. A feasible trajectory is selected based on the criteria: (i) the vehicle must be contained by a collision-free corridor given by an upper decision layer, (ii) the vehicle must be capable to track the generated trajectory, and (iii) the continuity of the path and curvature must be preserved in the joints. Our approach was tested considering a vehicle length (automated bus) of 12 meters. The scenario has the dimension of a real test location with multiple roundabouts.Item FTT-MA: A flexible time-triggered middleware architecture for time sensitive, resource-aware AmI systems(2013-05) Noguero, Adrián; Calvo, Isidro; Pérez, Federico; Almeida, Luis; Tecnalia Research & InnovationThere is an increasing number of Ambient Intelligence (AmI) systems that are time-sensitive and resource-aware. From healthcare to building and even home/office automation, it is now common to find systems combining interactive and sensing multimedia traffic with relatively simple sensors and actuators (door locks, presence detectors, RFIDs, HVAC, information panels, etc.). Many of these are today known as Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS). Quite frequently, these systems must be capable of (1) prioritizing different traffic flows (process data, alarms, non-critical data, etc.), (2) synchronizing actions in several distributed devices and, to certain degree, (3) easing resource management (e.g., detecting faulty nodes, managing battery levels, handling overloads, etc.). This work presents FTT-MA, a high-level middleware architecture aimed at easing the design, deployment and operation of such AmI systems. FTT-MA ensures that both functional and non-functional aspects of the applications are met even during reconfiguration stages. The paper also proposes a methodology, together with a design tool, to create this kind of systems. Finally, a sample case study is presented that illustrates the use of the middleware and the methodology proposed in the paper.Item Optimised TSO-DSO Coordination to Integrate Renewables in Flexibility Markets(IEEE, 2019-09) Madina, Carlos; Kuusela, Pirkko; Rossi, Marco; Aghaie, Hamid; Gomez-Arriola, Ines; Riaño, Sandra; POWER SYSTEMS; SISTEMAS FOTOVOLTAICOSThe necessary energy transition to decarbonize power systems is leading to increasingly important challenges for the operation of power systems. On the one hand, the intermittent nature of renewable generation requires system operators to procure ancillary services in larger volumes than in the past. On the other, the growing penetration of medium- and small-scale, flexible demand and storage systems in distribution networks could potentially offer network services, if they are aggregated effectively and there is an appropriate coordination between transmission system operators (TSOs), distribution system operators (DSOs) and aggregators. Therefore, an important topic to be analysed is whether distributed energy resources (DER) can replace traditional generation in the provision of ancillary services (AS), how this replacement will affect the system operators’ roles and how to improve the coordination between TSOs and DSOs. This paper shows the results of the cost-benefit analysis (CBA) performed within the project SmartNet to assess the advantages or disadvantages of different TSO-DSO coordination schemes, as well as the follow-up activities to be carried out in the project CoordiNet.
