Item European citizen and environmental noise: Information contents, frequency and communication ways(2003-05) Herranz, M. Karmele; Eguiguren, José Luis; CALIDAD Y CONFORT AMBIENTAL; SGFollowing the guidelines of the European Directive on Assessment and Management of Environmental Noise, since 2002 Labein's Acoustical Area has included noise communication and information between citizens and council into psychosocial studies of the environmental noise impact (annoyance). In the psychosocial studies data are recollected through a questionnaire. In the last psychosocial study carried out, 296 citizens (random sample) of a town of the north of Spain (100.000 inhabitants) were interviewed. The results indicated that the citizens had very little knowledge about their environmental noise (environmental noise level, action plans, noise sources, population with high annoyance...) and this could be due to a lack of communication between authorities and citizens. Nevertheless, the citizens seemed to be very interested in receiving information about the different aspects of environmental noise, moreover about the one related with acoustical improvements (action plans), and they would like to receive this information around every three months. The postal mail and the council magazine were the favourite ways to receive this environmental noise information.Item Hollow ceramic brick walls in Southern Europe dwellings: Limitations and future perspectives of use(2003-05) Cortes, Azucena; Esteban, Alberto; Centros PRE-FUSION TECNALIA - (FORMER)Hollow clay brick walls are one of the most common materials used for building construction, in many southern Europe countries like Italy or Spain. This particular way of construction is based on several different factors: raw material availability, thermal insulation requirements, need to reduce weight or simply 'tradition'. Future new building regulations, looking for a higher level of comfort in dwellings, are increasing the sound insulation requirements in dwellings (For instance, in Spain from 45 dB in laboratory up to 50 dB in situ). Current hollow clay bricks are pushed to improve their acoustical features to compete with other materials. This paper presents some experiences about the procedures for optimisation of the sound insulation of hollow brick walls, based on the combination of experimental work developed in laboratory and using mathematical models.Item Road traffic noise mapping in Spain and its presentation to the citizen(2003-05) Cortés, Azucena; Aspuru, Itziar; Vázquez, Manuel; Mercado; CALIDAD Y CONFORT AMBIENTALThe future success or failure of the action plans to reduce traffic noise in Europe (as a global objective of the new Environmental Directive) will depend on the ability developed by the local administrations to coordinate: social response to noise through information and awareness-raising tools; diagnostic and decision making tools together with evolution indicators and goals; action plan to reduce noise according to each local real situation. Such a complex task for the administrations involved in noise control should be fought, supported by acoustic experts, with the most innovative techniques to get the goals. This paper presents the most up to day innovative techniques to help local administrations to manage the huge amount of traffic noise information from noise mapping in an easy way, based on Geographical Information Systems as a powerful tool for decision making. This tool based on prediction methods to evaluate noise propagation in the city, is also a tool for awareness to the public, based on a social survey. The experience of some local Spanish administrations focus on this tools will be presented within an European frame.
