Item Direct Resistive Heating Simulation Tool for the Repair of Aerospace Structures through Composite Patches(2018) Garmendia, Iñaki; Vallejo, Haritz; Iriarte, Aroa; Anglada, Eva; MAQUINAS; COMPOSITE; CIRMETALBonded composite patches are very appropriate for aircraft structural repair, showing very good properties when compared with traditional mechanical fastening of metal sheets. The curing process of the composite patch must be done “onsite” and a direct resistive heating method has been proposed. The heat produced by the electric current through the Joule effect when crossing the patch carbon fibre bundles has been modelled with a Finite Element Program code, developed for the electric current equation. The heat conduction equation has also been modelled in the program, as well as the kinetics of the curing reaction of the composite resin. The electric resistivity of the materials is function of the temperature, so a nonlinear coupled system has been developed. Therefore, a complete simulation tool able to study different configurations, current intensities, materials, etc. for the composite patches is presented. A study case has been run with the developed code and results have been compared with experimental values. Good agreement is found.Item A Discrete and Improved Bat Algorithm for solving a medical goods distribution problem with pharmacological waste collection(2019-02) Osaba, Eneko; Yang, Xin-She; Fister, Iztok; Del Ser, Javier; Lopez-Garcia, Pedro; Vazquez-Pardavila, Alejo J.; Tecnalia Research & Innovation; Quantum; IAThe work presented in this paper is focused on the resolution of a real-world drugs distribution problem with pharmacological waste collection. With the aim of properly meeting all the real-world restrictions that comprise this complex problem, we have modeled it as a multi-attribute or rich vehicle routing problem (RVRP). The problem has been modeled as a Clustered Vehicle Routing Problem with Pickups and Deliveries, Asymmetric Variable Costs, Forbidden Roads and Cost Constraints. To the best of authors knowledge, this is the first time that such a RVRP problem is tackled in the literature. For this reason, a benchmark composed of 24 datasets, from 60 to 1000 customers, has also been designed. For the developing of this benchmark, we have used real geographical positions located in Bizkaia, Spain. Furthermore, for the proper dealing of the proposed RVRP, we have developed a Discrete and Improved Bat Algorithm (DaIBA). The main feature of this adaptation is the use of the well-known Hamming Distance to calculate the differences between the bats. An effective improvement has been also contemplated for the proposed DaIBA, which consists on the existence of two different neighborhood structures, which are explored depending on the bat's distance regarding the best individual of the swarm. For the experimentation, we have compared the performance of our presented DaIBA with three additional approaches: an evolutionary algorithm, an evolutionary simulated annealing and a firefly algorithm. Additionally, with the intention of obtaining rigorous conclusions, two different statistical tests have been conducted: the Friedman's non-parametric test and the Holm's post-hoc test. Furthermore, an additional experimentation has been performed in terms of convergence. Finally, the obtained outcomes conclude that the proposed DaIBA is a promising technique for addressing the designed problem.Item Effect of the Metal Transfer Mode on the Symmetry of Bead Geometry in WAAM Aluminum(2021-07-10) Veiga, Fernando; Suárez, Alfredo; Aldalur, Eider; Bhujangrao, Trunal; Tecnalia Research & Innovation; FABRIC_INTELThe symmetrical nature in the case of wall fabrication by wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) has been observed in the literature, but it has not been studied as a source of knowledge. This paper focuses on the comparative study of three drop transfer methods employing Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) technology, one of the most reported for the manufacture of aluminum alloys. The transfer modes studied are the well-known pulsed GMAW, cold arc, and the newer pulsed AC. The novelty of the last transfer mode is the reversal of the polarity during the preparation phase of the substance for droplet deposition. This study compares the symmetry of zero beads to determine the best parameters and transfer modes for wire arc additive manufacturing of 5 series aluminum. The pulsed transfer modes show values of 0.6 for symmetry ratio, which makes them more interesting strategies than cold arc with a symmetry ratio of 0.5. Furthermore, the methodology proposed in this study can be extrapolated to other materials manufactured with this technology.Item Eigenloss: Combined PCA-Based Loss Function for Polyp Segmentation: Combined PCA-based loss function for polyp segmentation(2020-08) Sánchez-Peralta, Luisa F.; Picón, Artzai; Antequera-Barroso, Juan Antonio; Ortega-Morán, Juan Francisco; Sánchez-Margallo, Francisco M.; Pagador, J. Blas; COMPUTER_VISIONColorectal cancer is one of the leading cancer death causes worldwide, but its early diagnosis highly improves the survival rates. The success of deep learning has also benefited this clinical field. When training a deep learning model, it is optimized based on the selected loss function. In this work, we consider two networks (U-Net and LinkNet) and two backbones (VGG-16 and Densnet121). We analyzed the influence of seven loss functions and used a principal component analysis (PCA) to determine whether the PCA-based decomposition allows for the defining of the coefficients of a non-redundant primal loss function that can outperform the individual loss functions and different linear combinations. The eigenloss is defined as a linear combination of the individual losses using the elements of the eigenvector as coefficients. Empirical results show that the proposed eigenloss improves the general performance of individual loss functions and outperforms other linear combinations when Linknet is used, showing potential for its application in polyp segmentation problems.Item jMetalPy: A Python framework for multi-objective optimization with metaheuristics: A Python framework for multi-objective optimization with metaheuristics(2019-12) Benítez-Hidalgo, Antonio; Nebro, Antonio J.; García-Nieto, José; Oregi, Izaskun; Del Ser, Javier; Quantum; IAThis paper describes jMetalPy, an object-oriented Python-based framework for multi-objective optimization with metaheuristic techniques. Building upon our experiences with the well-known jMetal framework, we have developed a new multi-objective optimization software platform aiming not only at replicating the former one in a different programming language, but also at taking advantage of the full feature set of Python, including its facilities for fast prototyping and the large amount of available libraries for data processing, data analysis, data visualization, and high-performance computing. As a result, jMetalPy provides an environment for solving multi-objective optimization problems focused not only on traditional metaheuristics, but also on techniques supporting preference articulation, constrained and dynamic problems, along with a rich set of features related to the automatic generation of statistical data from the results generated, as well as the real-time and interactive visualization of the Pareto front approximations produced by the algorithms. jMetalPy offers additionally support for parallel computing in multicore and cluster systems. We include some use cases to explore the main features of jMetalPy and to illustrate how to work with it.Item Kinematical and dynamical modeling of a multipurpose upper limbs rehabilitation robot(2018-02) Mancisidor, Aitziber; Zubizarreta, Asier; Cabanes, Itziar; Bengoa, Pablo; Jung, Je Hyung; Tecnalia Research & Innovation; Medical TechnologiesKnowing accurate model of a system is always beneficial to design a robust and safe control while allowing reduction of sensors-related cost as the system outputs are predictable using the model. In this context, this paper addresses the kinematical and dynamical model identification of the multipurpose rehabilitation robot, Universal Haptic Pantograph (UHP), and present experimental validations of the identified models. The UHP is a Pantograph based innovative robot actuated by two SEAs (Series Elastic Actuator), aiming at training impaired upper limbs after a stroke. This novel robot, thanks to its lockable/unlockable joints, can change its mechanical structure so that it enables stroke patient to perform different training exercises of the shoulder, elbow and wrist. This work focuses on the ARM mode, which is a training mode used to rehabilitate elbow and shoulder. The kinematical model of UHP is identified based on the loop vector equations, while the dynamical model is derived based on the Lagrangian formulation. To demonstrate the accuracy of the models, several experimental tests were performed. The results reveal that the mean position error between estimated values with the model and actual measured values stays in 3 mm (less than 2% of the maximum motion range). Moreover, the error between estimated and measured interaction force is smaller than 10% of maximum force range. So, the developed models can be adopted to estimate motion and force of UHP as well as control it without the need of additional sensors such as a force sensor, resulting in the reduction of total robot cost.Item A prescription of methodological guidelines for comparing bio-inspired optimization algorithms(2021-12) LaTorre, Antonio; Molina, Daniel; Osaba, Eneko; Poyatos, Javier; Del Ser, Javier; Herrera, Francisco; Quantum; IABio-inspired optimization (including Evolutionary Computation and Swarm Intelligence) is a growing research topic with many competitive bio-inspired algorithms being proposed every year. In such an active area, preparing a successful proposal of a new bio-inspired algorithm is not an easy task. Given the maturity of this research field, proposing a new optimization technique with innovative elements is no longer enough. Apart from the novelty, results reported by the authors should be proven to achieve a significant advance over previous outcomes from the state of the art. Unfortunately, not all new proposals deal with this requirement properly. Some of them fail to select appropriate benchmarks or reference algorithms to compare with. In other cases, the validation process carried out is not defined in a principled way (or is even not done at all). Consequently, the significance of the results presented in such studies cannot be guaranteed. In this work we review several recommendations in the literature and propose methodological guidelines to prepare a successful proposal, taking all these issues into account. We expect these guidelines to be useful not only for authors, but also for reviewers and editors along their assessment of new contributions to the field.Item Three-Dimensional Finite Element Modelling of Sheet Metal Forming for the Manufacture of Pipe Components: Symmetry Considerations: Symmetry Considerations(2022-01-25) Bhujangrao, Trunal; Veiga, Fernando; Penalva, Mariluz; Costas, Adriana; Ruiz, Cristina; Tecnalia Research & Innovation; FABRIC_INTELThe manufacture of parts by metal forming is a widespread technique in sectors such as oil and gas and automotives. It is therefore important to make a research effort to know the correct set of parameters that allow the manufacture of correct parts. This paper presents a process analysis by means of the finite element model. The use case presented in this paper is that of a 3-m diameter pipe component with a thickness of 22 mm. In this type of application, poor selection of process conditions can result in parts that are out of tolerance, both in dimensions and shape. A 3D finite element model is made, and the symmetry of the tube section generated in 2D is analysed. As a novelty, an analysis of the process correction as a function of the symmetrical deformation of the material in this case in the form of a pipe is carried out. The results show a correct fitting of the model and give guidelines for manufacturing.Item Upgrading Urban Services Through BPL: Practical Applications for Smart Cities: Practical Applications for Smart Cities(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2022-02-26) Uribe-Pérez, Noelia; Fernández, Igor; de la Vega, David; Nesmachnow, Sergio; Hernández Callejo, Luis; Tecnalia Research & Innovation; Oficina de Proyectos DigitalCurrent initiatives related to smart cities in LATAM reveal an increasing interest in the improvement of cities and the wellbeing of their citizens. In addition, specific working groups have been created for this purpose. In this sense, the communication technologies set the basis for gathering, transporting, and managing the large amount of data generated in cities to provide a wide range of services. Within the many alternatives available, BPL positions as a promising technology, since smart cities can greatly benefit of its higher data rates and low latency. In addition, since the medium is already deployed and most of the assets and sensors are connected to the same medium, the cost of the communication systems will be reduced in price and simplicity. The work presents four practical applications: smart buildings, urban lighting, energy assets management and broadband access, in which the possibilities and advantages of BPL are further addressed. Finally, some conclusions and key aspects relating BPL to the success of smart cities are identified.
