Item Composite polymeric materials as an alternative to aluminium for improved energy performance of ventilated façade systems(2019-11-20) Arregi, Beñat; Elguezabal, Peru; Álvarez, Izaskun; EDIFICACIÓN DE ENERGÍA POSITIVA; ECOEFICIENCIA DE PRODUCTOS DE CONSTRUCCIÓNVentilated façade systems have become an interesting solution in the field of energy efficiency for buildings thanks to their associated improvement in thermal insulation properties. However, differences exist between real and theoretical thermal performance, resulting in an increase of actual energy consumption above predicted values. Part of this mismatch can be attributed to thermal bridges both at support elements and at construction junctions, which are usually overlooked by simplified calculations. The present study assesses the potential for substituting metallic elements with polymeric composite materials for two key elements of ventilated façades: the support subframe of the external cladding and the external window reveals. Thermal, structural and durability properties are specifically assessed. Results show that overall heating energy savings between 7 and 13% can be obtained through the use of pultruded composite profiles at support brackets and window reveals instead of aluminium components. Such solutions are feasible from a mechanical and durability point of view, and the extra costs are offset in a short period through the reduction in heating expenses.Item “Plug and play” modular façade construction system for building renovation to achieve nearly Zero Energy Building (nZEB)(Architectural Science Association, 2020) Torres, J.; Garay-Martinez, Roberto; Torrens-Galdiz, J. Ignacio; Uriarte, Amaia; Pracucci, A.; Casadei, O.; Magnani, S.; Arroyo, N.; Cea, A.M.; Tecnalia Research & InnovationFollowing energy performance improvement policies, there is a need for the massive renovation of the European building stock. The prevalence of multi-rise buildings with concrete structure and poor thermal performance offers a significant opportunity for renovation packages that facilitate the improvement of the building fabric, with its insulation, air-tightness and integration of building services and solar technologies. The RenoZEB project develops a "plug and play" modular facade construction system answering to this need. This prefabricated plug and play modular system has been tested by reproducing the holistic methodology and new technologies in the market by means of real and virtual demonstrators. The applicability and effectiveness of the methodology has been tested by means of a full-scale mock-up system has been constructed and installed in the KUBIK by Tecnalia test facility. The design, construction, manufacture & installation cycle has been tested. Its applicability for a real construction project for a multi-rise residential building in Spain is presented.Item REVIEW OF THE EUROPEAN DWELLING STOCK AND ITS POTENTIAL FOR RETROFIT INTERVENTIONS USING SOLAR-ASSISTED HEATING AND COOLING(University of Cantabria, 2018) Elguezabal, Peru; Arregi, Beñat; Schuetz, Philipp; Gwerder, Damian; Scoccia, Rossano; Tsatsakis, Konstantinos; Biosca, Javier; Bortkiewicz, Anna; Waser, Remo; Sturzenegger, DavidThis study provides a characterization of the existing European stock of residential buildings, with a specific focus on their energy performance. Eight countries with different characteristics and climates have been selected as a representative sample. After identifying relevant parameters, data has been compiled from several sources, including national statistical bodies and European datasets from official and unofficial bodies, as well as previous research projects. Based on those projects as initial source of information, the study is complemented with energy efficiency related regulations as well as with external climate data. The collected information has been subject to a critical review and analysed to identify insights and trends related to the energy performance of European dwellings. The information gathered is intended to provide a general view about the current status for each of the assessed countries and by extension a global picture of the European stock. The outcomes of this study will constitute a realistic baseline scenario for identifying needs, potentials and constraints for renewable energy technologies, and will assist the development of a novel software tool for planning energy-efficient retrofits of residential buildings.
