Item Experimental and numerical thermal performance assessment of a multi-layer building envelope component made of biocomposite materials(2020-05-01) Arregi, Beñat; Garay-Martinez, Roberto; Astudillo, Julen; García, Miriam; Ramos, Juan Carlos; Tecnalia Research & Innovation; EDIFICACIÓN DE ENERGÍA POSITIVA; ECOEFICIENCIA DE PRODUCTOS DE CONSTRUCCIÓNBuilding envelope systems are rapidly evolving, driven by increasingly stringent requirements for limiting energy consumption. Current trends favour lightweight, prefabricated wall assemblies with high levels of insulation, which have been shown to be particularly sensitive to thermal bridging through anchoring and framing elements. This paper presents a self-supporting multi-layer wall component made from bio-based materials, where novel biocomposite profiles are used instead of conventional metallic frames. The thermal performance of the proposed solution is calculated from numerical modelling and characterised through in-situ measurement of a full-scale prototype. For the plane areas of the wall with continuous insulation, theoretical calculations are broadly in line with results from experimental monitoring (7–15% deviation). Additionally, an area along a framing profile was specifically monitored, and it was found that the numerical model overestimated thermal resistance with a deviation of 121%. The presence of air gaps between the rigid insulation and framing elements, linked to the fabrication process of the prototype, was identified as a plausible cause. A subsequent explanatory numerical assessment, considering the effect of such cavities in the numerical model, provided results that are consistent with measurements from the experiment and previous literature. The study aims at demonstrating the insulation levels achievable with the use of novel bio-based materials of low thermal conductivity, and more generally, contributing to a better understanding of the thermal performance of framed lightweight insulated assemblies in service conditions, by monitoring and modelling the impact of thermal bridges and workmanship at framing elements.Item Experimental Thermal Performance Assessment of a Prefabricated External Insulation System for Building Retrofitting(ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV, SARA BURGERHARTSTRAAT 25, PO BOX 211, 1000 AE AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS, 2017) Garay, Roberto; Arregi, Beñat; Elguezabal, PeruExternal Thermal Insulation Composite Systems (ETICS) are increasingly used for the energy-efficient retrofit of buildings. This paper evaluates the in-situ thermal performance of a prefabricated composite panel made of PIR and concrete, by full scale testing of a prototype installed at the KUBIK test facility. Experimental results from measurement show a reduction in the thermal resistance of the ETICS assembly compared to theoretical design values. A number of phenomena have been identified causing multidimensional heat flow of conductive and convective nature, such as thermal bridges at floor slabs and anchors, and thermal bypass of the insulation causing airflow behind the ETICS.Item Hybrid numerical and experimental performance assessment of structural thermal bridge retrofits(2018) Garay, Roberto; Garay Martinez, Roberto; Tecnalia Research & InnovationA methodological approach to the multi-dimensional heat transfer assessment of building envelopes is performed. The proposed method is particularly focused on thermally weak points in envelope-structure junctions and the assessment of envelope retrofit alternatives. Thermal performance in these spots is seldom assessed in energy audit processes, although it is one of the main heat loss paths in many insulated façade solutions. An envelope-slab junction case is presented, where multi-dimensional heat transfer occurs. The present paper proposes a methodology which allows for a hybrid experimental and numerical performance assessment in such circumstances. A numerical model is calibrated against experimental data, which is then modified to reflect various envelope retrofit solutions. Several possible analysis procedures are proposed, based on the capacities of transient thermal models.Item Plug and Play Modular Façade Construction System for Renovation for Residential Buildings(2021-09-18) Torres, Jorge; Garay-Martinez, Roberto; Oregi, Xabat; Torrens-Galdiz, J. Ignacio; Uriarte-Arrien, Amaia; Pracucci, Alessandro; Casadei, Oscar; Magnani, Sara; Arroyo, Noemi; Cea, Angel M.; Tecnalia Research & Innovation; E&I SEGURAS Y RESILIENTES; EDIFICACIÓN DE ENERGÍA POSITIVAThe present paper focuses on the architectural and constructional features required to ensure that building envelope renovation are safe, functional, and adaptable to the building stock, with particular focus on “plug and play” modular facade construction systems. It presents the design of one such system and how it addresses these issues. The outcome of early-stage functional test with a full-scale mock-up system, as well as its applicability to a real construction project is presented. It is found crucial to obtain high quality information about the status of the existing façade with the use of modern technologies such as topographic surveys or 3D scans and point cloud. Detailed design processes are required to ensure the compatibility of manufacture and installation tolerances, along with anchor systems that deliver flexibility for adjustment, and construction processes adapting standard installation methods to the architectural particularities of each case that may hinder its use or require some modification in each situation. This prefabricated plug and play modular system has been tested by reproducing the holistic methodology and new technologies in the market by means of real demonstrators. When compared to more conventional construction methods, this system achieves savings in a real case of 50% (time), 30% (materials) and 25% (waste), thus achieving significant economic savings.Item “Plug and play” modular façade construction system for building renovation to achieve nearly Zero Energy Building (nZEB)(Architectural Science Association, 2020) Torres, J.; Garay-Martinez, Roberto; Torrens-Galdiz, J. Ignacio; Uriarte, Amaia; Pracucci, A.; Casadei, O.; Magnani, S.; Arroyo, N.; Cea, A.M.; Tecnalia Research & InnovationFollowing energy performance improvement policies, there is a need for the massive renovation of the European building stock. The prevalence of multi-rise buildings with concrete structure and poor thermal performance offers a significant opportunity for renovation packages that facilitate the improvement of the building fabric, with its insulation, air-tightness and integration of building services and solar technologies. The RenoZEB project develops a "plug and play" modular facade construction system answering to this need. This prefabricated plug and play modular system has been tested by reproducing the holistic methodology and new technologies in the market by means of real and virtual demonstrators. The applicability and effectiveness of the methodology has been tested by means of a full-scale mock-up system has been constructed and installed in the KUBIK by Tecnalia test facility. The design, construction, manufacture & installation cycle has been tested. Its applicability for a real construction project for a multi-rise residential building in Spain is presented.
