Item Analysing Barriers to Achieving SDG 7. The environmental impact of wind energy systems, particularly on-shore and off-shore wind turbines, has been extensively researched using methodologies such as Life Cycle Assessment. However, creating more sustainable wind turbines involves rethinking their creation, production, and consumption. To reduce environmental impact, companies must overcome barriers to implementing eco-design and develop innovative solutions. Understanding these barriers is crucial for designing effective solution strategies in the wind energy sector. A case study was carried out on one of the top five original equipment manufacturers in the wind energy sector. Eco-design has become one of the most effective ways of incorporating environmental considerations into design activities, but also has led to increased innovation in wind turbine design and development, as well as in associated processes such as manufacturing, transportation, installation, operation, and maintenance. However, despite experience in environmental management systems and eco-design in particular, obstacles, both external and internal to the company, still need to be overcome to succeed in product eco-design. Among other barriers, technicians and managers often lack specialised ecodesign skills, which can hinder the process, and the labour market does not adequately respond to the demand for professionals with specific knowledge in this field. This paper focuses on the Italian market where surveys, interviews, and a workshop were conducted, and then a diagnosis was made on the results obtained. This paper provides an analysis of the factors that affect the use of wood in the construction sector, and an assessment of their importance in individual countries and for groups of stakeholders. The study covers the technical, societal, political, economic, and gender aspects of wood construction, with the aim of increasing global understanding regarding national differences, the current situation, and the potential for further development. The subject was investigated using a survey, and the most important opportunities for and barriers to growth in the use of wood in the construction sector were selected, following a statistical analysis. The results indicate strong regional and cultural differences regarding the acceptance of some of the opportunities and barriers related to the development of wood construction. The findings indicate that there is a need to promote wood construction based on its technical and economic benefits rather than its societal ones. On the other hand, the current societal barriers should be addressed as a priority, together with the establishment of common and harmonized policies. The results of this study, therefore, will contribute to the generation of regional-sensitive information that can be useful for policymakers when updating the building codes in their individual countries.Item Stimulating urban transition and transformation to achieve sustainable and resilient cities(2018-10) Mendizabal, Maddalen; Heidrich, Oliver; Feliu, Efren; García-Blanco, Gemma; Mendizabal, Alaitz; Tecnalia Research & Innovation; ADAPTACIÓN AL CAMBIO CLIMÁTICOPolitical decision-makers need to consider the various challenges and opportunities that climate change can bring, and they must take decisions under high uncertainty to achieve resilient cities. Here, we synthesise the push and pull approaches reported in the literature and employed in practice to achieve sustainable and resilient cities. First, we present a literature review which identified the major research fields on transition theories, frameworks and methods that underpin this concept. We analyse the conditions for change, identify enablers or triggers for change at governance level for transitioning a city towards sustainability and resilience. We discuss the theories, frameworks and methods which can be used to address the urban climate change challenge at city level. Second, we present an empirical approach based on stakeholder participation that we conducted to detect the conditions for change. We report on the design and implementation of stakeholder exercises that helped us detecting the conditions for changes. Third, we combine the information obtained from these stakeholder exercises with that extracted from the literature in order to provide a fuller picture on how stimulate the transition and transformation to achieve sustainable and resilient cities. Based on our literature review and empirical approach, we formulate an integrated conceptual model for transition that enables the design of adaptation (and mitigation) strategies that consider the triggers of change. Uniquely we identified 8 triggers of change, including authority and political leadership, learning from disasters, co-responsibility, increased public-private interface, social participation and the living lab approach to innovation. The proposed model can be applied to the whole city or to a certain sector of the city (e.g. energy). We demonstrate that triggers of change help to overcome planning and implementation barriers and move the socio-ecological and socio-technical systems of any city towards those of a resilient city.
