Item Application of MgB2 in superconducting wind turbine generators(2014) Pujana, A.; Marino, I.; Sarmiento, G.; Sanz, S.; Merino, J. M.; Villate, J. L.; DIGITAL ENERGY; Tecnalia Research & Innovation; GENERALOffshore wind market demands higher power rate and more reliable turbines in order to optimize capital and operational costs. The state-of-the-art shows that both geared and direct-drive generators are difficult to scale up to 10 MW and beyond. Their huge size and weight would drive up the cost of both fixed and floating foundations, as well as installation, operation and maintenance costs. New solutions to provide better power scalability, topside weight reduction and reliability are needed. Superconducting materials arise as a prominent solution for lightweight, high power wind generators construction [1]. There are already several superconducting generator concepts, but they face important challenges as cost, complexity and reliability. This work presents the application of MgB2 superconducting wire in an innovative 10 MW class lightweight, robust and reliable generator for wind turbines, which gives answer to the offshore sector demands while overcomes other superconducting generators challenges.Item Design, manufacturing and tests of first cryogen-free MgB2 prototype coils for offshore wind generators(2014) Sarmiento, G.; Sanz, S.; Pujana, A.; Merino, J. M.; Iturbe, R.; Apiñaniz, S.; Nardelli, D.; Marino, I.; Tecnalia Research & Innovation; DIGITAL ENERGY; POWER ELECTRONICS AND SYSTEM EQUIPMENTAlthough renewable sector has started to take advantage of the offshore wind energy recently, the development is very intense. Turbines reliability, size, and cost are key aspects for the wind industry, especially in marine locations. A superconducting generator will allow a significant reduction in terms of weight and size, but cost and reliability are two aspects to deal with. MgB2 wire is presented as one promising option to be used in superconducting coils for wind generators. This work shows the experimental results in first cryogen-free MgB2 prototype coils, designed according to specific requirements of TECNALIA's wind generator concept.Item MV Cable Modeling for Application in the Digital Twin of a Windfarm(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2019-07) Oñederra, O.; Asensio, F. J.; Eguia, P.; Perea, E.; Pujana, A.; Martinez, L.; DIGITAL ENERGYThe digital models of windfarms provide a useful tool when monitoring and controlling wind generators digitally and remotely, allowing its maintenance and optimization, thus reducing the costs due to downtime and increasing the reliability of the elements that intervene in the conversion of wind energy to electric power. These aspects acquire even greater relevance when it comes to remote locations such as offshore wind farms. In this sense, this paper describes a MV cable model aimed at emulating its behavior and lifetime in order to carry out a preventive maintenance. The model is based on a combination of a dynamic MV cable model and a PCHIP-based interpolation algorithm, which have been developed in open source software OpenModelica.
