Item CloudOps: Towards the Operationalization of the Cloud Continuum: Concepts, Challenges and a Reference Framework: Towards the Operationalization of the Cloud Continuum: Concepts, Challenges and a Reference Framework(2022-04-25) Alonso, Juncal; Orue-Echevarria, Leire; Huarte, Maider; HPA; Tecnalia Research & InnovationThe current trend of developing highly distributed, context aware, heterogeneous computing intense and data-sensitive applications is changing the boundaries of cloud computing. Encouraged by the growing IoT paradigm and with flexible edge devices available, an ecosystem of a combination of resources, ranging from high density compute and storage to very lightweight embedded computers running on batteries or solar power, is available for DevOps teams from what is known as the Cloud Continuum. In this dynamic context, manageability is key, as well as controlled operations and resources monitoring for handling anomalies. Unfortunately, the operation and management of such heterogeneous computing environments (including edge, cloud and network services) is complex and operators face challenges such as the continuous optimization and autonomous (re-)deployment of context-aware stateless and stateful applications where, however, they must ensure service continuity while anticipating potential failures in the underlying infrastructure. In this paper, we propose a novel CloudOps workflow (extending the traditional DevOps pipeline), proposing techniques and methods for applications’ operators to fully embrace the possibilities of the Cloud Continuum. Our approach will support DevOps teams in the operationalization of the Cloud Continuum. Secondly, we provide an extensive explanation of the scope, possibilities and future of the CloudOps.Item Data Harvesting, Curation and Fusion Model to Support Public Service Recommendations for e-Governments(SciTePress, 2018-01) Sedrakyan, Gayane; De Vocht, Laurens; Alonso, Juncal; Escalante, Marisa; Orue-Echevarria, Leire; Mannens, Erik; Hammoudi, Slimane; Pires, Luis Ferreira; Selic, Bran; HPA; CIBERSEC&DLT; Tecnalia Research & InnovationThis work reports on early results from CITADEL project that aims at creating an ecosystem of best practices, tools, and recommendations to transform Public Administrations with more efficient, inclusive and citizen-centric services. The goal of the recommendations is to support Governments to find out why citizens stop using public services, and use this information to re-adjust provision to bring these citizens back in. Furthermore, it will help identifying why citizens are not using a given public service (due to affordability, accessibility, lack of knowledge, embarrassment, lack of interest, etc.) and, where appropriate, use this information to make public services more attractive, so they start using the services. While recommender systems can enhance experiences by providing targeted information, the entry barriers in terms of data acquisition are very high, often limiting recommender solutions to closed systems of user/context models. The main focus of this work is to provide an architectural model that allows harvesting data from various sources, curating datasets that originate from a multitude of formats and fusing them into semantically enhanced data that contain key performance indicators for the utility of e-Government services. The output can be further processed by analytics and/or recommender engines to suggest public service improvement needs.Item Medina: Improving cloud services trustworthiness through continuous audit-based certification(CEUR-WS, 2021-03) Orue-Echevarria, Leire; Garcia, J.L.; Banse, C.; Alonso, JuncalOne of the reasons of the still limited adoption of Cloud Computing in the EU is the EU customers' perceived lack of security and transparency in this technology. Cloud service providers (CSPs) usually rely on security certifications as a mean to improve transparency and trustworthiness, however European CSPs still face multiple challenges for certifying their services (e.g., fragmentation in the certification market, and lack of mutual recognition). In this context, the EU Cybersecurity Act (EU CSA) proposes improving customer's trust in the European ICT market through a European certification scheme (EUCS). The proposed cloud security certification scheme conveys new technological challenges including the notion of automated monitoring for the whole supply chain, which needs to be solved in order to bring all the expected benefits to EU cloud providers and customers. In this context, MEDINA proposes a framework for supporting a continuous audit-based certification for CSPs based on EU CSA's scheme for cloud security certification. MEDINA will tackle challenges in areas like security validation/ testing, machine-readable certification language, cloud security performance, and audit evidence management. MEDINA will provide and empirically validate sustainable outcomes in order to benefit EU adopters.Item Optimization and Prediction Techniques for Self-Healing and Self-Learning Applications in a Trustworthy Cloud Continuum(2021-07-30) Alonso, Juncal; Orue-Echevarria, Leire; Osaba, Eneko; López Lobo, Jesús; Martinez, Iñigo; Diaz de Arcaya, Josu; Etxaniz, Iñaki; Tecnalia Research & Innovation; HPA; Quantum; IAThe current IT market is more and more dominated by the “cloud continuum”. In the “traditional” cloud, computing resources are typically homogeneous in order to facilitate economies of scale. In contrast, in edge computing, computational resources are widely diverse, commonly with scarce capacities and must be managed very efficiently due to battery constraints or other limitations. A combination of resources and services at the edge (edge computing), in the core (cloud computing), and along the data path (fog computing) is needed through a trusted cloud continuum. This requires novel solutions for the creation, optimization, management, and automatic operation of such infrastructure through new approaches such as infrastructure as code (IaC). In this paper, we analyze how artificial intelligence (AI)-based techniques and tools can enhance the operation of complex applications to support the broad and multi-stage heterogeneity of the infrastructural layer in the “computing continuum” through the enhancement of IaC optimization, IaC self-learning, and IaC self-healing. To this extent, the presented work proposes a set of tools, methods, and techniques for applications’ operators to seamlessly select, combine, configure, and adapt computation resources all along the data path and support the complete service lifecycle covering: (1) optimized distributed application deployment over heterogeneous computing resources; (2) monitoring of execution platforms in real time including continuous control and trust of the infrastructural services; (3) application deployment and adaptation while optimizing the execution; and (4) application self-recovery to avoid compromising situations that may lead to an unexpected failure.Item PIACERE: Programming trustworthy Infrastructure As Code in a Secure Framework(CEUR-WS, 2021-03) Alonso, Juncal; Joubert, Christophe; Orue-Echevarria, Leire; Pradella, Matteo; Vladušič, DanielInfrastructure-as-Code (IaC), enables the automation of several deployment, configuration and management tasks. IaC has a lot of potential in cloud computing as it results in a significant saving of time when an application needs to be redeployed on a different set of resources, even running on different infrastructures. Unfortunately, IaC still suffers from some important issues, such as the large variety of competing tools or the strong orientation toward the cloud, leaving aside e.g. the edge. Also, trustworthiness and security aspects of are often left for the end of the cycle, where errors and vulnerabilities are often too late or too expensive to correct. We present here the PIACERE project, which provides tools, methods and techniques for the Infrastructure-as-Code approach. The project will make the creation of IaC more accessible to designers, developers and operators, increasing the quality, security, trustworthiness and evolvability of infrastructural code while ensuring its business continuity by providing self-healing mechanisms anticipation of failures and violations.Item Towards Supporting the Extended DevOps Approach through Multi-cloud Architectural Patterns for Design and Pre-deployment - A Tool Supported Approach(SciTePress, 2018) Alonso, Juncal; Escalante, Marisa; Farid, Lena; Lopez, Maria Jose; Orue-Echevarria, Leire; Dutkowski, Simon; Maciaszek, Leszek; Maciaszek, Leszek; van Sinderen, Marten; HPA; CIBERSEC&DLT; Tecnalia Research & InnovationRecently the world of Cloud Computing is witnessing two major trends: Multi-cloud applications pushed by the increasing diversity of Cloud services leading to hybrid infrastructures and the DevOps paradigm, promising increased trust, faster software releases, and the ability to solve critical issues quickly (Steinborn, 2018). This paper presents a solution for merging and adapting both trends so that the benefits for software developers and operators are multiplied. The authors describe a tool-supported approach to extend the DevOps philosophy with the objective of supporting the design and pre-deployment of multi-cloud software applications. The paper begins with the presentation of the theoretical concepts, the proceeds with the description of the developed tools and the discussion of the validation performed with a sandbox application.
